|San Leandro Recreation and Human Services Department was recently selected to receive a National Facility Design Award by the National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA) for the Senior Community Center. NRPA will present the award publicly at a special reception at the association's 2012 Congress & Exposition in Anaheim, CA on Wednesday, October 17.|
Mayor Stephen Cassidy was very pleased with the National recognition and stated, "The benefits of the Senior Community Center have exceeded our expectations in every way – participation, revenues, green efficiencies and community support." Recreation and Human Services Director, Carolyn Knudtson said “We are thrilled! The National Award is the icing on the cake for us! We are rewarded every day by watching the positive impact these programs and this facility provides to our participants.”
“NRPA is pleased to honor our nation’s park and recreation heroes—agencies and individuals who work tirelessly and with passion to improve the lives of their citizens and make their communities great,” said Barbara Tulipane, CEO of NRPA.
The San Leandro Senior Community Center was chosen for the National Award for being a model facility in its inclusiveness and responsiveness to the needs of the community. A Senior Needs Assessment completed in 2000 identified a multi-purpose senior center as the highest priority need for seniors in San Leandro. Ten years of the City working with community members, stakeholder groups and partner organizations resulted in the San Leandro Senior Community Center; a 21,000 square foot, LEED Gold-certified new focal point in the community that offers senior programs, rental facilities and a state-of-the-art Emergency Operation Center.
The Senior Community Center provides a dedicated, centrally located, multi-use facility for seniors. Since opening in April 2011, the senior program has increased 42% overall (including social, lunch and educational programs), and 190% in classes and activities that teach participants how to improve strength and balance, express creativity, relax and have fun through exercise, dance, writing and more.
The NRPA is a national not-for-profit organization dedicated to advancing park, recreation and conservation efforts that enhance quality of life for all people. Through its network of 20,000 recreation and park professionals and citizens, NRPA encourages the promotion of healthy lifestyles, recreation initiatives, and conservation of natural and cultural resources.
