The City of San Leandro is searching for a new City Manager. While the interview of the candidates is by law a confidential matter, the City Coiuncil wishes to have the input of the community on what criteria the candidates should be evaluated. The Role and Duties of the City Manager:
The City Manager is appointed by the San Leandro City Council and serves as the administrative head of the City and key staff advisor to the Council. The City Manager is responsible for implementing policies as directed by the City Council and enforcing all municipal laws and regulations for the benefit of the community. The City Manager’s duties include direction and supervision of departments, preparation and administration of the annual City budget, and planning and implementation of key projects.
The ideal Candidate:
The City Council has set forth the experience, skills, and knowledge for our next City Manager. They include:
• The ideal candidate will be an inspiring visionary, possessing strong leadership skills, be
extremely well versed in all aspects of local government finance and will possess a history
of prudent financial stewardship and responsible oversight.
• The individual selected will be a confident and persuasive communicator who is sensitive to
the communications and information needs of the organization and the community.
• A gifted thinker, the ideal candidate will be open to new ways of doing business when
efficiencies can be realized and services can be streamlined or improved.
• The ability to create and maintain effective long-term working relationships with elected and
appointed officials is a prerequisite for success in San Leandro.
• A minimum of five years of senior management experience in a municipal setting is required.
• A Bachelor’s Degree in a relevant discipline is required; a Master’s Degree is preferred.
