Library Cards

Library cards are not transferable, and are issued to an individual only. No family, group, or organization cards will be issued. All cards are subject to renewal. To apply for a library card or renew a library card, a photo identification and verification of residence are required. A temporary address does not meet requirements. Conditions for continued service may be modified at any time.


How to Obtain a Library Card

  1. Bring two documents that verify current address. The first document must be a photo ID. The second, supporting address verification document must be dated within the past 90 days. The address listed on the two documents must match.
  2. a. Acceptable Photo IDs:
  • California Driver's License
  • California Identification Card
  • United States Passport
  • United States Military Identification
  • Student Body Identification Card

b. Acceptable Address Verification Documents:

  • Printed (not handwritten) bills in hardcopy or digital format
  • Current automobile registration
  1. Fill out a short application which is available at the Circulation Desk of every San Leandro Library branch.
  2. a. For minors (children under 14 years of age), a parent or legal guardian must be present and sign the application.
  3. The parent's or guardian's signature serves as permission to the San Leandro Public Library to issue a library card and grant computer access to the minor.

 

  • Lost Cards

  • Each cardholder is responsible for all materials borrowed on his or her library account.
  • Library card holders agree to immediately report a lost or stolen library card by calling the Main Library Circulation Desk at (510) 577-3970. The account will be blocked
  • A photo ID and a payment of $3 will be required to obtain a replacement card.

Card Types

  • Resident - No Charge
    Permanent residents within the incorporated limits of the City of San Leandro are eligible for a free library card. A photo identification and verification of residence are required to obtain or renew a library card.
  • San Leandro Property Owner - No Charge
    Persons owning property within the incorporated limits of the City of San Leandro are eligible for a free library card. Limited to taxpayer, spouse and minor children. A photo identification and verification of residence are required to obtain or renew a library card.
  • San Leandro Student, K-12 - No Charge
    Any student enrolled at a kindergarten through 12th grade public or private school in the incorporated limits of the City of San Leandro or a designated school serving San Leandro residents may receive a free library card. Library card applications, including the granting of permission to use the computer, must be signed by a parent or legal guardian for anyone under the age of 14. A verification of school enrollment is required to obtain or renew a library card.
  • San Leandro Teacher, K-12 - No Charge
    Any teacher teaching kindergarten through 12 grade at a public or private school in the incorporated limits of the City of San Leandro or a designated school serving San Leandro residents may receive a free library card. A photo identification and verification of employment at the school are required to obtain or renew a library card.
  • Non-Resident- $60 per year
    Individuals who do not live within the City of San Leandro, or who do not meet any of the above requirements must purchase a non-resident library card. Paid cards are valid for one year from the date of issue. All members of a family living at the same address are included. A photo identification and verification of residence are required to obtain or renew a library card.
  • Full-time, Non-Resident San Leandro Employee - $30 per year
    To qualify, you must work full-time (40 hours per week) within the incorporated limits of the City of San Leandro. Paid cards are valid for one year from the date of issue. Limited to worker only. A photo identification, verification of residence, and verification of full-time employment (i.e. paycheck stub) are required to obtain or renew a library card.
