Recycling Event FAQs
Where is the event?
The recycling event is being held at the Alameda County Industries (ACI) facility, 610 Aladdin Avenue, between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.  For a map to the facility, click here.

What do I need to access the Event?

Bring your post card invitation to access the event.  If you did not register to the event, be sure to bring a current picture ID with your San Leandro address.

What items can I recycle at the Event?
Appliances, electronics, CDs, DVDs, audio and video cassettes, cell phones and chargers, empty toner cartridges, tires, green waste, clean wood - no paint or stain, metal, mattresses, household batteries and fluorescent lights.

How many electronics or appliances can I bring?
Residents are limited to one (1) car or passenger truck load of materials per household.

Can I bring a barbecue, lawnmower, or bicycle?
Yes, as long as it's mostly metal.  Be sure to drain all fluids.

Car BatteryCan I bring car batteries, auto fluids, household chemicals, medication, syringes, lancets or other household hazardous waste to the event?
No!  These items will NOT be accepted at the event.  To dispose of these and other hazardous waste contact the Alameda County Household Hazardous Waste Program.  The Hayward and Oakland facilities will be open the day of the event from 9am to 1pm.  For more information and a complete operating schedule visit www.household-hazwaste.org or call (800) 606-6606.

How many tires can I bring?
Limit is nine (9) tires.  Rims are ok.

Can I bring old furniture?
No, we can only accept branches, stumps, brush and milled wood that is unpainted or untreated.

Household BatteriesHow do I package batteries?
Batteries must be packaged in a manner that prevents short circuit.  Lithium, 6-volt and 9-volt batteries should have ends taped.  Alkaline batteries should be separate from rechargeable batteries and packaged in a sealed plastic bag.  Car batteries will not be accepted at the event.

How do I package fluorescent lights?
One easy way is to box them up in the packaging from your new lights.  If you did not save the packaging, place CFLs in a small box.  Be careful NOT to break the bulbs as they contain mercury that is hazardous.  Keep all fluorescents separate from other items you are recycling.

Can I attach a small trailer to the back of my vehicle?
Yes.

Sorting StationsShould I separate the various materials?
Yes.  The recycling facility is set-up with stations.  When you load items to your vehicle, place similar items together - that is, organize your vehicle so that electronics are grouped, appliances are together and green waste is separate from other items.  This will make the transition from one station to the next much easier.  Also, keep batteries, fluorescent lights, cell phones and techno trash (CDs, DVDs, audio and video tapes, etc.) in a place that's easy to access.  These will be the first items you drop off when you go through the sort line.  For a map of the stations, click here.

If I can't make it to this event, can I drop off items another day?
No, this is a one day event held annually. The ACI facility is not open to the public.

I am not able to participate this day.  What are my options?
Single-family households are entitled to one free bulky goods collection per year. Call your refuse provider to set up an appointment for curbside collection.  Collection is limited to 2 cubic yards of trash, 3 bulky items, and 4 unmounted tires. Call your refuse provider for more information.
