Hesperian Boulevard Medians Project

Spring 2011

Employees from the Street Services Section installed 100 cubic yards of mulch in the street medians on Hesperian Boulevard from East 14th Street to Springlake Drive. The mulch was sourced locally from the Davis Street Garden Center. The mulch is made from locally derived wood and tree trimmings and serves to suppress weeds, retain soil moisture and beautify the landscape.

Bay Friendly Logo  The City adopted a Civic Bay Friendly Landscaping Ordinance in 2010. The ordinance requires the City to follow Bay-Friendly guidelines when installing new landscapes. The guidelines are also used as a tool for ongoing maintenance. City staff employ Bay Friendly practices such as the use of mulch, grass cycling, water conservation and drought tolerant plant selection on a regular basis to maintain public landscapes in San Leandro.
Bay-Friendly is a holistic approach to gardening and landscaping that works in harmony with the natural conditions of the San Francisco Bay Watershed.  Bay-Friendly practices foster soil health, conserve water and other valuable resources while reducing waste and preventing pollution.
