San Leandro's Alerting & Warning System

Community Alerting & Warning System Logo Preparing for a disaster before it occurs is an integral part of surviving and responding to any disaster that might impact our community. The City of San Leandro is stepping up its response capabilities for emergencies with the launching of an Alerting & Warning System that will alert and inform the community in the event of a disaster.

San Leandro's Alerting & Warning System consists of 8 sirens strategically placed throughout the city to cover all portions of San Leandro, any of which may be activated during a localized or Citywide emergency. The goal is to train residents and businesses to tune into 1610 AM, Radio San Leandro, once a siren is heard to obtain information about the emergency and what to do.

The Alerting & Warning sirens will be an essential response tool in an emergency and are maintained and activated by the San Leandro Police Department and the Alameda County Fire Department. Sirens will be sounded in the event of dangers resulting from earthquakes, chemical spills, flooding, fires, storms, power outages, transportation accidents, terrorist acts, and other public safety incidents.

Follow these three simple steps if you hear a siren sound:

  1. Shelter - Go inside your home, a nearby building, or your car and shelter inside to avoid exposure. If time permits, take your pets with you. If you are driving, pull over, roll up windows, turn off the engine and stay tuned to Radio San Leandro, 1610 AM.
  2. Shut - Shut all doors and windows. Turn off ventilation systems, including fireplace vents. Lock doors and windows to create the best seal.
  3. Listen - Tune to Radio San Leandro - 1610 AM, the City's cable Channel 15 or visit this Web site (www.sanleandro.org) and link on the ?Emergency Information? button on the home page for updated information. Avoid using the phone unless you have a life-threatening emergency.

Testing of the sirens is critical to the success of the program. SirensĀ are tested on the first Wednesday of each month at noon.

If you hear the sirens being tested, please do not call 911.

Only call 911 if you have an emergency.

Share this important information and practice the 3 steps of Shelter - Shut - Listen with your family, friends and colleagues. Safety and preparedness is a shared responsibility; together we can make a difference!
