Ranked Choice Voting

Ranked Choice Voting will be used in the November 8, 2022 General Municipal Election to elect the Mayor and City Councilmembers for Districts 1, 3 and 5. Ranked Choice Voting allows voters to rank a first, second and third choice candidate for a single office. This makes it possible to elect Councilmembers by majority vote, without the need for a separate runoff election.

San Leandro's City Charter requires a successful candidate to receive at least 50 percent plus one votes in order to be elected. In 2006 and 2008 City elections, the general municipal election was held in June, and if no candidate received more than 50 percent plus one of the votes cast for the office, a runoff election was held in November between the two highest vote-getters for that office. Using Ranked Choice Voting, San Leandro voters only have to vote once - in November - for City Council races.

Ranked Choice Voting is only used for the Mayor and City Council races, and does not affect the election of County, State, federal or special district officials, or the approval or rejection of ballot measures.
