Identity Theft

The San Leandro Police Department will accept online reports of Identity Theft when the suspect is not known to you or anyone else you know.

If you are the victim of identity theft or fraud please locate and keep all papers, receipts, cancelled checks, mail from companies, etc. related to this crime. We may contact you at a later time to obtain these items from you if they are needed. You should keep copies for your records.

View some groups you should contact if you are the victim of identity theft or fraud. Some of these organizations will ask for the police report number you receive once your online police report is approved.

Helpful Tips

  • If it sounds too good to be true, it is. Nothing is for free and if you try to win big by sending someone money for a portion of their lottery winnings, you've just lost. These are all common scams that lure people in to take your money and/or identity.
  • Protect your social security number and only give it out when required by law.
  • No bank, auction site or other business should send you an email asking you to enter credit card information, passwords, social security numbers or other personal information. These are fake emails containing links to pages that look real but they are not. If you receive any email from one of your financial institutions requesting you to logon for an important message, close the email and do not click on any links. Open a new webpage and go to the actual home page of the website to login to receive any real communications.
  • Avoid mail theft by obtaining a locking mailbox and depositing outgoing mail at the local post office or postal mailbox.
  • Do not give out your personal information or credit card numbers over the phone unless you initiated the call. Never provide ANY information over the phone to someone who has called you first.
  • Shred credit card offers, bank statements, and any documents that contain your personal information before discarding in the trash.
