State & Local Recycling Requirements
SB 1383 Statewide Mandatory Organics Waste Collection!
Starting January 1, 2022, all businesses are required to subscribe to recycling and organics service. Proper sorting is required, and will be enforced, to ensure that recyclable and organic materials do not go in the garbage (landfill). Local jurisdictions are required provide education about what goes into each container and monitor for contamination. Account holders will be notified when contamination is found and suggested corrective action. Penalties may be assessed on the business if correction action is not taken. SB 1383 also addresses food insecurity in California by requiring some food generating businesses to donate surplus edible food.
