Fire Services
Fire protection services are provided under contract with the Alameda County Fire Department (ACFD). The Alameda County Fire Department brings the resources of a regional fire department to serve the citizens of San Leandro. In all, the department serves approximately 508 square miles and a daytime population of 517,000 people. In addition to fire suppression, the Alameda County Fire Department provides Fire Prevention (see below) public education, dispatch services, first-responder/paramedic services on all engine companies and all necessary fire and emergency medical support services, and three specialized response teams, which include:
- Hazardous Materials Unit
- Urban Search and Rescue Unit
- Water Rescue Team Unit

Fire Prevention
The San Leandro Fire Prevention Division applies the regulations set forth in both State and Local codes. The Division assists with the development of safe environments in new occupancies and maintains fire and life safety in existing buildings.
Fire prevention inspectors conduct periodic inspections of facilities to ensure that business operations are conducted in a safe manner and are consistent with the conditions of approval. The Fire Prevention Division issues permits and conducts inspections for special events such as carnivals, fairs, and events with tents or canopies. These services are provided under contract with Alameda County Fire Department, and is located at San Leandro City Hall.
