Tips to Prepare for Upcoming Rainstorm and Sandbag Availability
San Leandro is expected to get heavy rain and winds over the next several days, with total estimated rainfall up to 4 inches. The National Weather Service (NWS) anticipates that the showers will accompany 33 mph winds and mildly cold temperatures. NWS also issued a flood watch from 1 p.m. on Thursday, March 9th, until 10 a.m. on Sunday, March 12th. Excessive runoff may flood rivers, creeks, streams, and other low-lying and flood-prone locations.
Storm drains have limited capacity, and flooding may occur in low-lying areas and/or at high tide during an initial downpour based on the storm's severity. Since Public Works crews may take several hours to respond to reports of flooding, clogged storm drains, or downed tree limbs, you can assist by:
Checking drainage systems and removing debris as necessary. Collecting and properly disposing of heavy leaf falls before storms occur. Removing leaves and debris from storm drain inlets with a rake or shovel. Join Adopt A Drain to regularly check the drain closest to your house. The City offers a limited supply of tools to adopters to keep inlets clear. Using sandbags and plastic sheeting to protect flood-prone entrances to homes. Driving slowly and carefully, particularly where water has accumulated on roadways. Stay tuned to local radio and television sources for the latest weather information. The City of San Leandro posts emergency information on the local radio channel AM 1610. Tree crews will respond to downed trees and limbs based on the seriousness of the hazard. During a storm, priority is given to removing trees and limbs from streets and sidewalks. Crews will also prioritize street tree and limb removal from homes, cars, and power lines. Property owners are reminded that clean-up of privately owned trees and branches is the owner's responsibility, whether the clean-up is on the owner's property or neighboring property, including City property. City trees that have fallen on private property are the responsibility of the City to clear. Property owners should contact private tree trimming/removal companies, their insurance companies, and utilities directly if their private tree falls and causes damage to their property. Private trees should be properly trimmed and maintained in advance of storm season to prevent tree failure and serious damage to private property during storms.
The City advises residents to be cautious when using City parks since park paths may not be clear of debris, and broken branches and unstable trees could pose a danger to park users. Contacts If you experience emergency flooding or if a downed tree or limb causes a hazard, please use the following contact numbers: During regular business hours (7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Monday - Friday), call (510) 577-3440 (Public Works Department) After hours and on weekends and holidays, call (510) 577-2740 (Police Dispatch) Do not call 911 to report flooding unless rising water poses an immediate threat to life or safety.

Advisory Message for Residential Properties Adjacent to County of Alameda Flood Control Wall. Out of an abundance of caution, it is advised to relocate personal property (e.g., portable sheds, patio furniture, plants, dog houses, etc.) from the residential backyard edges adjacent to the flood control wall. This action intends to prevent debris blockage if the wall collapses during the next rainstorm.
Note: On Sunday, January 8th, after 9 a.m., a team of volunteers, organized by City Council Members, will go door-to-door to inquire if residents need physical support relocating personal property.

San Leandro Mayor Juan Gonzalez's Statement Regarding Alameda County Flood Control Wall Collapse in the Manor Neighborhood.
The flood control wall in the Manor neighborhood continues to experience weather-related impacts. City staff is collaborating with Alameda County staff to address the flood control wall compromise near Manor Blvd, as the County is responsible for the maintenance and repair of the wall. The City appreciates the increased presence of the Alameda County Public Works Agency. If the wall's compromise has impacted you, you may be eligible to file a claim with Alameda County by using the claim form located at the following link: https://acgov.org/clerk/forms/claimagainstcounty.pdf
As soon as the storm passes, I plan to meet with newly-elected Alameda County Supervisor Lena Tam. I will share with Supervisor Tam San Leandro's community priorities, with repairing the flood control wall being the most immediate and critical.
As the rainstorm continues into the weekend and next week, please stay vigilant, follow the City and Police social media pages, monitor the City's website (SanLeandro.org), and sign up for the SLPD Nixle Alerts by texting your Zip Code to 888-777.

Update as of 0928 hours, 1.6.2023
While the City of San Leandro's treatment plant operates 24/7 to prevent sanitary sewers from overflowing, when rainwater gets in, it can overwhelm the capacity of the system. The subsequent overflow is consistent for any heavy rain event, such as the one the Bay Area experienced that started on New Year's Eve. Bay Area residents should avoid contact with Bay and flood waters during a rainstorm - and shortly thereafter - because untreated sewer water can make its way to these areas.
