About the Resilience Hubs Initiative

The City of San Leandro ‘s Sustainability Department is partnering with Planting Seeds Consulting, Collective Resilience and other community-based organizations and governmental agencies to support the development of a network of resilience hubs, spaces and blocks. The six-month program includes an in-person workshop on October 20th, monthly peer-to-peer focused workshops, consulting and fundraising support for enrolled sites.

We have enrolled several sites already in San Leandro, and are opening up program applications for a limited number of sites in Bay Area cities interested in developing their sites as resilience hubs.  This program will also help sites to prepare for funding opportunities, including the state of California's $110 million dollar funding opportunity in early 2023 for "Community Resilience Centers."

Launch Agenda

Opening and networking opportunities: get to know others building resilience through place-based work.

Overview of resilience hubs: Dr. Hoi-Fei Mok and consultant Susan Silber will introduce the concept of resilience hubs and San Leandro’s initiative, and the Resilience Hubs Initiative cohort will present their sites.

Breakout Rooms: Heat waves, earthquakes, flooding and more… we will invite a discussion about ways that resilience hubs could support present and future disasters.

About Resilience Hubs and Neighborhoods

As described by the Urban Sustainability Directors Network (USDN), resilience hubs are “existing trusted community-serving facilities can become resilience hubs by increasing their adaptive capacity and augmenting their building systems, such as with uninterrupted power. When there is a disruption, they want to be prepared to meet their neighborhood's specific needs in that situation, which may range from food distribution to shelter.” This approach allows communities to self-determine their needs and identify sites for holistic well-being not only during disruption, but during the everyday and recovery as well.

In listening to the needs of Black, Indigenous, people of color (BIPOC) communities, the Resilience Hubs Initiative will support not just facilities (places of worship, community centers, etc) but also other sites defined below as spaces and neighborhoods:

Resilience Spaces:  These can include schools, community gardens and other spaces that are intended to enhance community resilience on a smaller scale and are often, but not always, connected to a full-service Resilience Hub.

Resilience Blocks/Neighborhoods A resilient block consists of neighbors working together to build resilience through disaster preparedness, climate solutions, and community organizing (i.e. community events, projects, block parties, mutual aid, etc.).
