[ARCHIVED] San Leandro Vice Statement on the Renaming of the San Leandro Main Public Library

Renaming of the Library - Office of the Vice Mayor

San Leandro Vice Mayor  Bryan Azevedo's Statement on the Renaming of the San Leandro  Main Public Library  At the February 21st City Council meeting, I made a priority referral to rename the San Leandro Main Public Library after a San Leandro resident. After hearing from constituents, residents, and other stakeholders, and in response to their comments, questions, and concerns, all of which I carefully and thoughtfully considered and appreciated, I asked my fellow Council colleagues to modify the original referral. Renaming the Library is not more significant than addressing crime, homelessness, or solid waste services. Since most of the City Council voted to make this item a priority matter at the February 21st Council meeting, I motioned to remove the priority designation during the March 6th City Council meeting. My motion included removing the priority referral to the City Council Rules Committee; the Council approved my motion. Therefore, the renaming of the Library item will come to the City Council at its next priority-setting session. I support considering additional names while the City Council considers this item at our next priority-setting session.
