The Trees Master Plan (“TMP”) was initiated by the City of San Leandro as a multifaceted approach for enhancing the urban forest, creating a proactive tree maintenance schedule, strengthening community resilience, implementing climate actions for carbon sequestration, and ensuring that public trees and their associated benefits are distributed equitably throughout the City. The TMP was identified in the City’s 2021 Climate Action Plan as an adaptation strategy for improving community-wide health, safety, and wellbeing, and is being developed over a 2-year period from Q2 2022 - Q2 2024 through ARPA funding.
Key components of the TMP include:
- A tree Inventory of 20,000 public trees in parks, along streets, and in the public rights-of-way trees, 4,000 planting sites, and 1,500 stumps is underway. The results will provide the data needed to create a proactive tree management program.
- The urban heat assessment will use social vulnerability and urban heat data to identify and prioritize areas needing more tree canopy.
- Data-driven citywide tree canopy goals will utilize priority planting areas and encourage tree preservation.
- Community engagement and education will foster stewardship as new trees are planted and mature trees are preserved in San Leandro.
