1. What do I do if I answered "Yes" to one of the questions and online reporting is not right for me?

If your incident is an emergency, call 911. If you want to make a report of a non-emergency incident, call 510-577-2740 and an officer will respond to take your report.

2. What if this incident occurred in another city, can I file a report using this online reporting system?

No, if a crime occurred outside of the City of San Leandro then you need to contact the police agency that is responsible for that location. Reports entered online that occurred outside the city limits will be rejected. If this occurred in unincorporated San Leandro, please call the Alameda County Sheriff's Office at 510-667-7721.

3. What if this incident happened on the freeway?

If you want to report an incident that occurred on a freeway, please call the California Highway Patrol office nearest you.

4. What is a known suspect?

A known suspect is when you or someone else knows the identity of the person, or where to find the person, who committed the crime. It would also be considered a known suspect if you have the license plate number of the vehicle the suspect(s) were in.

5. What if there is evidence or fingerprints left behind?

If there is obvious evidence that was left behind by the suspect or if you are concerned about potential fingerprint evidence being not collected, then an online report is not appropriate for you. Officers will not respond at a later time to collect evidence for reports made online. Evidence left at the scene of a crime is time sensitive and easily destroyed. If you desire evidence to be evaluated or collected, then you should make your report by calling 510-577-2740 so an officer can determine if the potential evidence is useful.

6. What is a temporary report number and can I use this for my insurance or official purposes?

When you complete your online report you are given a temporary report number for reference only. This number is used if you need to check on the status of your report or there is additional information that needs to be added. The temporary report number is not an official police report and should not be provided as proof that a police report was filed.

7. How long will it take to get a copy of my online report?

The online reporting system is not continuously monitored by police personnel. Depending on staffing and day of the week, your report may not be reviewed for a few days. Once your report is reviewed, you will receive a copy of your official police report via the email address you provided.

8. How much will is cost to get a copy of my police report?

There is no cost to complete your police report online. You will receive a free copy of the report sent as an attachment to the email address you provided.

9. What if I don’t have an email address?

An email address is required to complete the online reporting process. Notifications will be sent to the email address if any additional information is needed or if a report is rejected. If you don't have an email address, this would be a good time to signup for a free email address from any of the numerous providers.

10. I don’t have a computer at home and my employer won’t let me take the time to complete an online report at work. What options do I have?

The City of San Leandro has provided computers with internet access for public use at the City Library. Feel free to stop in and use a computer for free to complete your online report. Online reports are for your convenience and you are not required to complete a report online for the types of reports listed. If filing an online report is not convenient for you, then call 510-577-2740 and an officer will respond to take your report.
