1. How do I know when a new job posting will open?: If there’s a position you're very interested in and you're highly qualified for it, it may be worthwhile to click on the Job Interest Form link and select all interested job categories. This will request an e-mail notifying you of a future job opening for which you are interested. This link is also an option located left side of your screen.

2. Does the City of San Leandro accept paper applications?: No, all applications must be submitted online through the City’s open Job Opportunities page.

3. How do I create an account to apply?: Step-by-step instructions on how to create an account for GovernmentJobs.com can be found on the City’s Online Employment Application Guide.

4. Can I submit a resume instead of the online application?: No. It is important that your application exhibits all of your experience and education. You can attach your resume; however, you MUST complete all sections of the application, especially the work experience and education fields. Incomplete applications may be rejected.

6. How do I determine if I am eligible for Veterans’ Preference?: If applying for first-time employment with the City of San Leandro within five years of separation from full-time active service, veteran's preference points will be given to honorably discharged veterans who served a minimum of three consecutive years of full-time, active service in the Armed Forces of the United States. Candidates must receive an overall passing score in order to qualify for the application of veteran's preference, which will result in a three percent increment to that passing score. Applicants wishing to qualify must, prior to the application deadline, attach or provide a DD Form 214 as proof of eligibility for the veteran's preference.

7. What does the term 'continuous' listed under closing date mean?: Each position has a different recruitment timeline. Certain positions stay open until there are enough qualified candidates, or until the position has been filled. Also, certain recruitments may be limited to a specific number of applicants. Please review the job posting thoroughly for important information regarding deadlines. We encourage you to apply promptly. We reserve the right to close any recruitment at any time without notice.

8. What does the term 'minimum qualifications' mean?: Minimum Qualifications are the basic work experience, education, training, and/or licensure necessary to be considered successful in a job. A specific degree, professional certification, specific industry knowledge, or years of experience all constitute a different level of knowledge, skills, and abilities. It is important that your application displays your qualifications for the job in which you’re applying.

9. How can I check the status of my application?: Review of all submitted applications will take place after the job announcement closes and can take 2 to 3 weeks depending on the number of applications received. You will receive an email status update at the end of application review, letting you know the next steps. Also, you may reference the recruitment bulletin for additional information.

10. Do I need to answer the required questions on the application?: Yes, all job announcements for the City of San Leandro will include supplemental questions. Since these responses are rated and used to determine whether your application will proceed further in the process, it is important to answer all questions clearly and thoroughly. Some questions may have multiple parts; answer all parts of each question. Responses such as “see resume” or “see application” will be treated the same as no response.

11. How long does an Employment List last?: Employment Lists shall remain in effect for one year, unless terminated or exhausted. The Employment List generated from a recruitment may be utilized to fill future vacancies while the List remains active.

12. What is an Employment List?: An Employment List is a list of qualified persons that will be considered for employment. This list contains the names of all applicants who have received a passing score from oral/practical exams and is ranked from highest to lowest score.
