PRESS RELEASE

DATE / TIME OF RELEASE: 07/16/13, 9:38 AM

INCIDENTS: Residential robbery

PRESS RELEASE OFFICER: Lieutenant Randall Brandt

TELEPHONE: 510-577-3232

DATES/TIMES: 07/14/13, 11 PM

LOCATIONS: 2000 block of Britannia Lane, East of Shining Star Lane

INVESTIGATING DETECTIVE: Detective Sergeant Ted Henderson

SUSPECT(S):

2 Black male adults, both were approximately 5’10” tall and weighed around 150 pounds. They were wearing dark clothing and one of them was armed with a hand tool.

DETAILS:

On 07/14/13, approximately 11 PM, a Chinese family was asleep in their residence located in the 2000 block of Britannia Lane. The two suspects described above entered their residence through an open window.

The suspects demanded money from the family and they threatened to harm them with a hand tool they possessed if they chose not to cooperate. The victims cooperated and the suspects fled with the loss. Nobody was physically injured during the robbery.

Lt. Randall Brandt stated, “We are very fortunate that nobody was hurt during this incident. Summer is here and residents need to leave their windows and doors shut to avoid being targeted by thieves. Suspects will often take advantage of citizens who leave their windows and doors open during warm summer nights."

Suspects will target citizens that have not been proactive in burglary prevention. This includes keeping accessible doors and windows shut, installing surveillance cameras and alarms to deter them from being targeted.

We will be educating community members on these matters at “United for Safety” which is an open house held on July 27th, between 9am - 2pm at our police department. (901 E. 14th Street)

Citizens play a critical role in creating a safe environment by observing and reporting any suspicious and criminal activity to the Police. The San Leandro Police Department recommends that citizens do not participate in any direct verbal or physical involvement with suspicious persons or those who are committing crimes. The personal safety of the community is paramount. We encourage the San Leandro community to record the details of what they observe and to report those details to the Police. This type of community involvement and partnership has proven to be a very effective crime prevention tool. Citizens act as the eyes and ears of the community first, and the extended eyes and ears of the San Leandro Police Department. Thank you for being a force multiplier in our efforts to provide professional police services and safety to the community.
