On 06/11/14, approximately 4 PM, an alert citizen recognized suspicious activity in the area of Begier Avenue and Saint Marys Avenue. They observed two vehicles pulled up beside each other and she did not recognize the vehicles or the occupants. The citizen immediately called and reported their observations to our dispatch center. Patrol units were dispatched to the scene to investigate. Our officers arrived and one of the vehicles sped off and a subject in the driver seat of the second vehicle got out and ran off. Officers from several divisions started to arrive in the area and they confirmed the vehicle the suspect had abandoned was a stolen vehicle out of Oakland. Officers were able to successfully locate and arrest the suspect with the assistance of a police canine. The suspect Kentreal Irving (25) of Oakland was booked for auto theft.
Lt. Randall Brandt stated, “This was a perfect example of how we can be successful fighting crime with assistance from our community. Citizens should not hesitate to report their observations to us immediately. This arrest may not have been possible without the keen observations and timely reporting by this citizen.”

Citizens play a critical role in creating a safe environment by observing and reporting any suspicious and criminal activity to the Police. The San Leandro Police Department recommends that citizens do not participate in any direct verbal or physical involvement with suspicious persons or those who are committing crimes. The personal safety of the community is paramount. We encourage the San Leandro community to record the details of what they observe and to report those details to the Police. This type of community involvement and partnership has proven to be a very effective crime prevention tool. Citizens act as the eyes and ears of the community first, and the extended eyes and ears of the San Leandro Police Department. Thank you for being a force multiplier in our efforts to provide professional police services and safety to the community
