|San Leandro, CA: Mayor Stephen Cassidy and the San Leandro City Council announced that the City of San Leandro is forming a new Arts Commission. The primary purpose of this new commission will be to make recommendations to the City Council on policies that will assist in the development, promotion and placement of visual and performing arts throughout the San Leandro community.
"Art touches us on profound level. It feeds and nourishes the soul no matter the age," noted Mayor Cassidy. "Art also bring substantial economic benefits to cities by invigorating public spaces and creating greater commercial activity. We aspire for San Leandro to become a thriving center for the arts, and the new Arts Commission will help make this vision a reality. I encourage everyone with knowledge of or an interest in the arts to apply.”
As part of their duties, commission members will have the opportunity to create and recommend projects, programs, and events that will bring high quality, visually stimulating artistic and cultural amenities to San Leandro. Commissioners also will have the opportunity to work with a diverse group of community stakeholders, while learning about the roles, services, and responsibilities of local government.
The Commission will be made up of nine members, with six members appointed from each City Council District and three “at-large” members who will be appointed by the Mayor. Up to two of the “at-large” appointees may reside outside of San Leandro, although it is expected that any appointees who do not reside in San Leandro should be involved in the cultural life of the community. Appointments typically will be for four year terms with the possibility of re-appointment, although initial appointments from Districts 1, 3, 5, and at-large appointees will serve for a two-year term that expires on December 31, 2016. Members of the public interested in applying should possess an interest, knowledge, or expertise in the visual or performing arts, a desire to enhance the cultural life of San Leandro, and the ability to interact positively with others in a public forum.
Applications are available electronically through the Boards and Commissions Application page, although hard copies also are available for pick up at the City Manager's office on the second floor of City Hall, located at 835 East 14th Street. Hard copies may be requested by mail by contacting the City Clerk’s Office at (510) 577-3366. Applications will be reviewed beginning on October 3rd. It is anticipated that the Mayor and City Council will announce their nominations on October 20th, with final appointments being approved on November 3rd.
