Important Update

As of March 1, 2021, the San Leandro Public Library has eliminated its fee card policy. This means that any California resident can apply for and receive a San Leandro Public Library Card. To learn how to apply online, click here.


The Library issues free Library cards to anyone residing in California.


Library cardholders agree to obey the rules and regulations of the San Leandro Public Library and to abide by the borrower’s agreement.


Library card and borrowing regulations may change as needed to respond to community needs. 

Borrower's Agreement

The Library cardholder may borrow circulating Library materials, use the Library's Internet stations, and access electronic resources and materials.

A Library card is issued to an individual, who agrees to: 

  • Be the sole card user. 
  • Accept responsibility for any card use and fines or fees. 
  • Present card for transactions. 
  • Report missing card or address, phone, or email change. 

Parents or guardians of cardholders under the age of 18 are responsible for the above. 

Apply for a Card Online

While the library remains closed due to COVID19, please apply for a temporary library account online. To get started, email our Circulation Department ( with the following information:


Adults/Teens (14 years old and over)/San Leandro and San Lorenzo Teachers

  • Name
  • Birthdate
  • Phone number (for Library PIN)
  • Current Address
  • School (if Teacher)

Minors (under 14 years of age)

  • Name (Child)
  • Birthdate (Child)
  • Name (Parent or Guardian)
  • Phone number (for Library PIN)
  • Current Address
  • School

Please note this is a temporary Library account.  If in the future when the Library reopens you would like a permanent San Leandro Public Library account, your account will need to be activated in person. To activate your account, you will need to:

  • Visit any San Leandro Public Library location
  • Show a picture ID with your current California address
  • Fill out a library card application
  • Receive a physical library card

We hope to supply San Leandro Public Library account information within 48 hours of your request (subject to change depending on amount of requests we receive).  If you already have a San Leandro Public Library account, and need access to your card number or PIN, please email to request this information.

Apply for or Renew a Library Card


Visit any library location, complete a short application (for a new card only), and present the following:


A valid California ID with current residence address.

OR, one item from EACH of the following two lists:

  • Current Photo ID for Name Verification:
    • California ID (if address listed on ID is not current) 
    • Passport
    • Green Card
    • Military ID
    • School-Issued Student ID
    • Employee ID Card
    • Out-of-state Driver's License
    • Credit Card with Photograph

  • Current Address Verification (must include name and California residential address):
    • Mail postmarked within the last 30 days
    • An auto registration dated within the past year
    • Current utility bill dated within the last 30 days (may be presented in paper or on a mobile device)

Please note: Library card applications for children ages 4 to 13 must be submitted and signed in person by a parent or guardian. The child or children must be present. The signature grants permission to the San Leandro Public Library to issue a library card and allow the minor access to the library’s computers.

Library Account PIN

Your library account PIN is the last four digits of the phone number you supplied when you applied for your library card. If you are unsure of your PIN, or need to update you PIN, please email for assistance. 

Homebound Patrons

Homebound patrons may authorize use of their library card by filling out an authorization form: San Leandro Public Library Authorization form

  • The library card holder is responsible for all transactions charged to their library account, included but not limited to all fines and fees (for example, charges for overdue, lost, or damaged materials) as is noted on the back of the San Leandro Public Library card and to which they agreed to when they received and signed their library card.
  • The authorization of use is valid until either the library card holder cancels this request, or the library account expires.  The library card holder is responsible for alerting the library if they wish to revoke this privilege at any time.
  • The authorized person must provide a valid photo ID each time they come to checkout library materials.
