The San Leandro Public Library is excited to announce the limited reopening of our Main Library starting Wednesday, May 19th!  

Library staff are working hard to get the Main Library ready to welcome you back for in-person services.  


 The Main Library’s limited in-person service hours  are

  •  Tuesdays 12:00-8:00 pm
  •  Wednesdays 10:00-5:00 pm
  •  Thursdays 10:00-5:00 pm
  •  Saturdays 10:00-5:00 pm

Patrons are asked to limit their time in the library to no more than one hour and to abide by all safety protocols including social distancing and mask requirements. 


 In addition to the Library’s in-person service hours, virtual reference services will be offered as follows:

  • Mondays 10:00-8:00 pm (phone and email service)
  • Tuesdays 10:00-12:00 pm (phone and email service)
  • Wednesdays 5:00-8:00 pm (phone and email service)
  • Thursdays 5:00-8:00 pm (phone and email service)
  • Fridays 10:00-5:00 pm (phone and email service)
  • Sundays 12:00-4:00 pm (email service)

Services Available at the Main Library

  • One hour time limit  Patrons are asked to limit their time in the library to no more than one hour and to abide by all safety protocols including social distancing and mask requirements.
  • Computer use – Public computers will be spaced to enforce social distancing, with 60 minutes allowed per day.
  •  Printing – You can print 20 black and white pages for free each day with your San Leandro Public Library card.
  • Self-service copiers ($.15/page)
  • Collection browsing – All areas of the collection will be open for you to browse and find your next favorite read, movie, or music!
  • Circulation services – You can now come in the library to checkout materials, receive limited library card services including replacement library cards and setting up a new library account, holds pickup, and returning your library materials in our outside bookdrop 24/7!
  •  Limited Reference Services – Library Staff will be available for limited reference servicesbut will not be able to touch computers and personal devices in order to maintain social distancing.

    Services NOT available at the Main Library


    For the safety of the public and library staff, the following will not be available inside the Main Library


    • Chairs and tables for reading and studying
    • Access to our History Room, meeting rooms, Café, Bookstore, or the Children's Secret Garden
    • Extended research or technology assistance
    • In-person events
    • Toys, play spaces, and touchscreen computers
    • Curbside appointments 

Safety at the Main Library 

  •  One Hour Visits - Patrons are asked to limit their visits to one hour or less during our Limited Reopening phase.
  • Limited capacity (125 patrons) to allow for social distancing.
  • Masks required - Please note that masks are required to enter the building for patrons ages 2 and older, and must be work properly over your nose and mouth at all times per CDC guidelines.
  • Social distancing - Please remember to maintain social distancing at all times while in the library. This means keeping 6 feet between yourself, library staff, and other patrons at all times.
  • Self-service disinfecting - Hand sanitizing stations will be set up around the Main Library for use. Self-service disinfecting wipe stations will also be set up around the library, and our patrons will need to disinfect high-touch services and computers before and after use.
  • Stay home if you are not feeling well - Please do not enter the Main Library if you are feeling unwell to protect library staff and other patrons.
  • Children under the age of 10 must be accompanied by and adult, and directly supervised while using the library at all times.
  • No group gatherings or playdates please.
  • No eating or drinking while using the library.

Patrons are asked to abide by all time limits and safety protocols, including social distancing and mask requirements. 



Will the entire Main Library be open? 

The first and second floor collections, including the Children’s Library and Teen Corner, will be open for browsing. Some areas of the Library will remain closed, including the History room, the Electronic Learning Center (ELC), meeting rooms, the Secret Garden, the cafébookstore, and water fountains. 


Can I browse the Main Library’s book collections? 

All collections at the Main Library are available for browsing, except the books in the History Room. 


Is the Children’s library open?  

The Children’s Library will be open for collection browsing and limited computer use. The tables, reading chairs, touchscreen early literacy computers, toys and play space are not  available at this time. Limited reference service is available at the Children’s Desk.

How can I use a computer at the Library? 

There are 8 standing computers and 16 seated computers available for 60-minute sessions, with a minimum of six feet between each computer. Patrons are requested to use hand sanitizer and disinfect shared equipment after use. We also have an  assisted technology computer for patrons with disabilities, and a video phone booth for deaf individuals. You will need a library card number to use a computer. If you don’t have a card, please request an e-card at least 24 hours in advance of your visit, or you can apply for a card onsite. 


Can I get help with my computer or device at the Library? 

Staff will be following public health guidance and safety protocols, including maintaining at least 6 feet of space and limiting in-person conversations. Staff will not be able to touch computers or personal devices, so assistance will be limited.  


How can I print at the Library? 

There are two ways to print: 

  • Use wireless printing to print from your device. Please see more information about how this works. 

  • Use a Library PC to print a document (you will need your San Leandro library card number to login) 

  • Patrons can print up to 20 black and white pages daily for free 


Can I study at the Library? 

At this time, tables and reading chairs are not available, for the safety of both the staff and the public. 


Can I pay for my lost or damaged items while at the Library? 

We will not be taking in-person payments until further notice, so please use our app or visit our website for payments. 


The Library currently unable to make change for our copy machines or Print Release stations at this time. Please come prepared with small bills or coins (no pennies) for the copy machine. The Print Release station accepts small bills, coins (no pennies), or a credit or debit card. 


I don’t have my library card with me – how can I check out materials? 

  • You can download our mobile app and enter your barcode, then use that at the Library to borrow materials 

  • If you lost your card, please email for a replacement barcode. 

  • For new library cards, please email us at least 24 hours in advance of your visit to request an e-card. 


What safety precautions are you taking? 

  • Please review our safety precautions listed on our Contactless Curbside Hold Pickup page. 

  • Visits are limited to one hour or less 

  • Capacity is capped at 125 visitors 


Can I donate books now? 

  • We are not taking book donations at this time.   


Can I attend a program at the Library? 

  • Programs will continue to be held virtually until it is safe to resume indoor gatherings without distancing restrictions. 

When will the branch libraries be re-open? 

  • Our branches will reopen when staffing permits.


Can I still use curbside? 

  • As we transition to limited in-person services, we will halt all our curbside appointment services. 


Is WiFi available at the Library? Can I use my laptop at the Library? 

  • While WFi is available, there are no tables or chairs for general use right now, so there isn’t a place to sit to use a laptop or mobile device.
