Hazardous Waste

Hazardous Waste

The Alameda County Household Hazardous Waste Program operates four facilities in Fremont, Hayward, Livermore, and Oakland to accept poisonous, toxic, corrosive or flammable household products for disposal. The facilities also accept hazardous waste from businesses that qualify as Conditionally Exempt Small Quantity Generators (CESQG).

Accepts the following materials:

  • Paints, thinners and varnishes
  • Automotive fluids and batteries
  • Cleaners and solvents
  • Pesticides and Fertilizers
  • Fluorescent lights
  • Household Batteries

As of 2006, it is illegal to dispose of household batteries, fluorescent lights, aerosol cans (containing fluid), mercury containing devices (including flashing toys and shoes), and any electronic device in the garbage. These items must be taken to a household hazardous waste facility or other authorized recycling facility.

PaintCare, a California paint product stewardship program, has several local permanent drop-off sites where the public can take unwanted, leftover paint for recycling.  Sites accept all latex and oil-based house paint, stains and varnish regardless of manufacturer in containers up to 5 gallons in size.  Sites do not accept aerosols (spray paint or other spray products), containers without original labels, or containers that are empty or leaking.  Paint is accepted during regular business hours.  Call ahead for hours and to make sure the store can accept your amount of paint.

Used Motor Oil

There are two ways to recycle used oil:

  • Leave your used oil curbside on your recycling collection day.
Pour your used oil into 1-gallon jugs with a screw top lid. Be sure NOT to mix the oil with other fluids. Call your recycling service provider to request free containers. (If you live in the Alameda County Industries (ACI) service area you can also recycle oil filters at the curb, placed in a sealed Ziploc bag.)
  • Take your used oil to a collection center.
You may drop off up to 5 gallons of used motor oil per day at a certified used oil collection center and receive a $.40 per gallon refund in cash or coupons.
