The Street Services Section schedules trimming both on an area basis and in response to individual requests.
The most efficient way to trim trees is to send a crew into an area and have them trim all of the trees in an area. Staff established tree trimming areas in 1997 and has scheduled trimming according to these pre-determined areas (see map). The City trims young trees to develop proper growth habits at an early stage. Older trees are trimmed depending upon the needs of that tree.
We respond to over 1,500 unscheduled telephone requests per year for tree service. These requests are integrated into the area trimming schedules as much as possible. Telephone requests are prioritized based upon the need for trimming and the urgency of the request. If a request reveals a safety hazard, service is provided the same or next day.
Note: Section 5-2-200 of the San Leandro Municipal Code states that it is unlawful for any person other than the City or its contractors to remove, prune, injure or destroy a City street tree, with a fine of up to $1,000.
